A British individual is nearing the establishment of a new national record for traversing Australia, a distance of 2,684 miles (4,320km). Jack Pitcher, aged 28, from Bracknell, Berkshire, commenced his journey from Perth on 6 October, accompanied by Joshua Smith, 21, from Reading. Mr. Pitcher stated that he had to “carry the torch” after his companion sustained an injury, compelling him to cease running and cover the rest of the distance by bicycle. The two individuals are projected to arrive at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Wednesday, completing the journey in 60 days. The prior British record, established in 2023, was 77 days, achieved by Nikki Love, 56, from Nottingham. In 2022, Australian ultra-marathon runner Nedd Brockmann accomplished the same feat in a mere 46 days and 12 hours. Mr. Pitcher, who has a history of depression, expressed his hope that the run would serve as an inspiration for individuals facing mental health challenges. He stated: “The last sort of few days for me, it’s been absolute torture. I’m going to bed at about 10.30 and I’m up at 04.30 having breakfast.”I’m stretching, I’m getting ready. I can barely move and then I’ve got to try and find the strength to run for 16 hours.” The athlete mentioned that notable aspects of the journey encompassed the natural surroundings and the generosity of unfamiliar individuals. He remarked: “The wildlife has been amazing. I’ve seen emus, kangaroos, wombats.”A lot of Australian drivers actually stop and give you cold drinks. “I’ve been very shocked at some of the storms out here at night, the heaviest rain I’ve ever seen, the most aggressive lightning.” Mr. Pitcher and Mr. Smith are collecting donations for SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, and ARC Wokingham, which is a volunteer-operated counselling service.
