The Ports of Jersey (PoJ) has announced an internship opportunity with a company that is researching hydrogen technology applications within the island’s maritime sector. According to the PoJ, this internship, in collaboration with OceansLab, a French company led by yachtsman Phil Sharp, will be available to either a student from Jersey or an early career professional based there. Last year, OceansLab formed a partnership with both the PoJ and the Government of Jersey. Their joint objective was to explore the application of hydrogen technology across port infrastructure and various types of vessels, including ferries, dredgers, and cargo ships. The PoJ specified that the paid internship will span two months and will be conducted at OceansLab’s main office in La Rochelle, France. As stated by the PoJ, the chosen intern will acquire practical experience in hydrogen technologies, encompassing areas like fuel cells, the production and storage of hydrogen, and its application within the marine industry. Matt Thomas, who serves as the chief executive of the PoJ, commented that the ongoing research into hydrogen represents a “step towards a zero-emissions marine industry”. He further elaborated, stating, “Our main role is to keep islanders connected with the rest of the world but it’s also our responsibility to work towards sustainable, decarbonised travel.” Interested individuals can submit their applications for this internship via the official website of the PoJ.
