The signature burger from The Beefy Boys, a restaurant group founded by childhood friends from Hereford, secured fourth position in its category at an international competition. Their Oklahoma Onion Boy burger was entered into the World Food Championships, which took place in Indianapolis. Co-founder Anthony Murphy expressed the team’s sentiment, stating, “Obviously we would’ve loved to have won it but still being in the top five burgers in the world is incredible.” The Beefy Boys began by preparing burgers at home and currently operate restaurants in Hereford, Cheltenham, and Shrewsbury. Mr. Murphy further commented on the experience, saying, “The competition was so much fun, getting to meet all these amazing burger restaurants from places like Dubai, Korea and all around the world.” He continued, “To be competing against them is just amazing, it’s such an honour to be here and considered amongst all those burgers around the world.” The World Food Championships brings together over 1,500 chefs and teams who contend across 12 distinct culinary categories. Victors from each category advance to “the final table” competition, where they vie for the ultimate title and a prize of $150,000 (approximately £117,700). For their participation, the team enhanced their signature burger by incorporating bone marrow and truffle. The Beefy Boys initially participated in this competition in 2014, where they achieved second place. Mr. Murphy remarked on the significance of the event, stating, “The world championships is such a huge part of the Beefy Boy’s story, and coming second at the 2014 competition gave us the push to open out first restaurant.” He added, “Heading back in 2024, ten years later, felt like a homecoming.” For further updates, BBC Hereford & Worcester can be followed on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X, and Instagram.
