BBC Sport’s chief football writer Phil McNulty has been addressing inquiries from readers. A reader named Greg submitted a question, stating: “With the next Everton boss on everyone’s lips, I think we saw the right man for the job over the last four days. He won’t get it because the new owners will bring their own man in, but it is Lee Carsley for me. He knows the club, would bring young players through, and play the football we crave.” In response, Phil McNulty noted that he has received “a few questions about Lee Carsley and Everton over the last few weeks.” He concurred with Greg’s view that Carsley is unlikely to be considered if, as McNulty anticipates, prospective new owner Dan Friedkin appoints his preferred candidate to succeed Sean Dyche. This change is projected to occur “at the end of the season with – in the ideal scenario – Everton still in the Premier League and Dyche’s contract expired.” Considering Everton’s current challenging situation, the managerial position would present a significant undertaking for any individual, particularly one without prior full-time experience at club level. Carsley’s tenure as England’s interim manager could have been entirely unblemished, save for “a reckless selection gamble that backfired against Greece at Wembley.” Nevertheless, he successfully “fulfilled his remit in restoring them to the top-tier of the Nations League, while giving youth players their chance.” While the caliber of the opposition must consistently be factored in, Carsley’s achievements offer considerable grounds for pride. Regarding the Everton manager role, it is deemed “Not now, but maybe at some time in the future.” It is also acknowledged that he was “a highly respected player and personality during his time at the club.” Sandi Toksvig is joined by Gyles Brandreth, Lulu, Emmanuel Sonubi and Alan Davies Grab the mic for Queen, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry and more… Ben Fogle and Kate Humble are back for the festivities at Longleat Safari Park From micro plastics in our air, soil, and waterways, to the extent of food waste at this time of year © 2024 BBC.
