Russia and Ukraine have conducted reciprocal air assaults, following a week of heightened verbal exchanges during which Russia deployed a novel missile against Ukraine. Russia has carried out nearly 1,500 attacks on Ukraine since Sunday night, impacting approximately half of the nation’s regions and resulting in dozens of casualties, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Concurrently, Ukraine’s armed forces reported hitting a significant oil storage facility situated south of Moscow, along with sites in the Bryansk and Kursk frontier areas. The deployment of Russia’s Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile against the Ukrainian city of Dnipro concluded a week of intensified conflict, a period that also marked Ukraine’s initial use of US and British missiles against Russian territory. Reports indicate that US President Joe Biden has authorized Ukraine to employ longer-range Atacms missiles against objectives within Russia, in retaliation for Moscow’s deployment of North Korean forces. Oleh Synehubov, Governor of Kharkiv, stated that 23 individuals sustained injuries during a missile attack on the city of Kharkiv, where emergency recovery efforts were actively ongoing. He added that an S-400 missile was employed in the assault. The emergency services department in Odesa reported that 10 individuals were wounded in a missile assault, which caused damage to residential structures, educational institutions, and a university athletic facility. Local authorities indicated that an additional three people were injured in attacks on the Kherson region, with one person injured in each of the Zaporizhzhya and Chernihiv regions. Concurrently, the Ukrainian armed forces announced that during the night, they targeted the Kaluganefteprodukt oil storage facility in the Kaluga region, situated southeast of Moscow, using drones. According to sources speaking to Ukrainian media, the assault triggered multiple explosions and ignited a blaze at the location. The Russian military has not issued any statement regarding the attack; however, regional governor Vladislav Shapsha stated that fragments from drones intercepted by air defense systems had resulted in “a fire on the territory of an industrial enterprise”. He further noted that a total of eight drones were neutralized. The Ukrainian military additionally reported assaults in the Bryansk and Kursk regions, without detailing the specific targets. Nevertheless, Russian military commentators asserted that the Khalino air base in the Kursk region was hit in an assault involving eight US-provided Atacms missiles. Dense cloud formations on Monday obstructed satellite imagery of the airfield, hindering confirmation of assertions that it was impacted during the nocturnal attacks. Video shared on social media – depicting vivid flashes in the sky over the frontier area – purported to capture the interception of Ukrainian Atacms missiles by Russian air defense systems in another part of the Kursk region. The video also contained discernible explosions. Although BBC Verify confirmed the authenticity of the footage and its origin in Kursk city, it was not feasible to determine if the flashes observed were caused by strikes involving US-supplied missiles solely from the video evidence. The United States’ authorization for Atacms deployment is reportedly confined to this specific region due to the presence of North Korean military personnel. These troops are believed to be participating in a Russian offensive aimed at dislodging Ukrainian forces from a limited section of the Kursk region, which the latter seized in a sudden assault during the autumn. Russia’s defense ministry merely stated that it had intercepted eight ballistic missiles originating from Ukraine, without specifying their location. Russian forces have additionally been targeting Ukraine’s energy grid, seeking to impose challenging circumstances as the winter season draws near. Russia initiated a comprehensive invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Both nations are currently endeavoring to gain a strategic advantage on the battlefield prior to Donald Trump assuming the US presidency in January and his anticipated efforts to conclude the conflict. He has pledged to resolve the war within hours but has not disclosed the specific methodology. Further reporting contributed by Thomas Spencer.
