The Melbourne Renegades’ victory follows their last-place finish in the previous season. In the Women’s Big Bash League final held in Melbourne, the Melbourne Renegades scored 141-9 (20 overs), with Matthews contributing 69 runs and Knott taking 3-28 wickets. The Brisbane Heat managed 90-6 (12 overs), with Jonassen scoring 44 runs and Matthews taking 2-24 wickets. The Melbourne Renegades secured a win by seven runs using the DLS Method. West Indies all-rounder Hayley Matthews was instrumental, scoring 69 runs and taking two wickets, as the Melbourne Renegades defeated Brisbane Heat in a rain-affected women’s Big Bash League final. The Renegades triumphed by seven runs, determined by the DLS method, securing their first trophy in the tournament’s 10th season. Matthews spearheaded their batting effort, scoring her runs from 61 deliveries before her dismissal in the final over, as her team posted a total of 141 runs for nine wickets. Precipitation commenced during the fourth over of the Heat’s pursuit of the target, when they had scored 15 runs for two wickets, prompting the covers to be brought onto the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Consequently, their innings was shortened to 12 overs, and the Heat were then given a revised target of 98 runs for victory. However, shortly after play resumed, Georgia Redmayne was out for 16 runs, before Matthews dismissed Charli Knott and Laura Harris with consecutive deliveries. Captain Jess Jonassen made a valiant effort to guide her team to victory, scoring an unbeaten 44 runs from 28 balls. Nevertheless, the Heat concluded their innings at 90 runs for six wickets, experiencing their second consecutive defeat in a WBBL final. “It’s pure elation. It’s been a long 10 years at the Renegades, plenty of highs and lows,” said Melbourne skipper Sophie Molineux.”It’s just been so good this year. I’m just really happy for everyone involved. It does mean a lot.” Broadcasts of the men’s Big Bash are scheduled to commence on BBC Sounds, BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, and the BBC Sport website and app starting 15 December.
