A 19th Century country house in Derby has been purchased by a property developer. Derby City Council had placed Allestree Hall, located within Allestree Park, on the market earlier in the year. The authority confirmed that Staton Young has now acquired the building, with plans to convert it into a wedding venue. The city council expressed its hope that this development would breathe new life into the historic residence. Constructed in the early 1800s on land previously owned by the Mundy family of Markeaton Hall, Allestree Hall was commissioned by Bache Thornhill and designed by James Wyatt, an architect also responsible for directing the building of Heaton Hall in Manchester. The council obtained the property in 1946 and subsequently transformed a portion of its grounds into an 18-hole golf course, which ceased operations in November 2020. Since then, the land has reverted to its natural state, becoming the United Kingdom’s largest urban rewilding initiative. Marc Brough, managing director at Staton Young, stated: “Allestree Hall presents us with a great opportunity to restore a piece of Derby’s history.” He added, “We’ve got some exciting plans and can’t wait to bring this beautiful building back to life.” Kathy Kozlowski, the city council’s cabinet member for governance and finance, stated that the authority hoped the sale would allow Allestree Hall to “can reclaim its former glory.” She added: “After years of searching for the right buyer, we’re thrilled to have found a Derby-based preferred bidder with experience of revitalising historic properties,” and concluded: “Allestree Hall, a building rich in history and potential, is poised for a new chapter.”
