A bipolar support group in Devon has marked 30 years of providing assistance to individuals living with the condition. Torbay’s Bipolar Support Group is among the nominees for the Partnership Category of the Pride of Devon Partnership NHS Trust Award, which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. Simon Kitchen, chief executive of Bipolar UK, stated that the group is operated by people who themselves have bipolar, a mental health condition characterized by extreme mood swings. He explained that the group serves as a venue for individuals to share their experiences and “feel like they’re not going through living with bipolar by themselves”. Mr. Kitchen noted that the condition affects approximately 2% of the population. He described how the severe emotional fluctuations, both highs and lows, can persist for a “couple of hours, or can sometimes even last for weeks or months at a time.” He added, “Untreated it can be very debilitating.” Angie Lidman, who has been a member of the group since June 2023, shared that it has provided her with an opportunity to receive guidance and assistance within a secure and private environment. She stated, “I’ve been able to get quite specific support and techniques.” Ms. Lidman mentioned the significant role music plays in her life, but explained that her condition prevented her from joining a band. She further commented, “The group have really helped because they’ve encouraged me to bring a guitar from time to time and sing.” Ms. Lidman described the experience, saying, “Just being able to go to the group with the guitar, in a relaxed environment, has been a godsend to me really.” Mr. Kitchen highlighted that the group fosters a sense of community. He remarked, “The Torbay group is quite an amazing group in and of itself.” He continued, “They are quite an exceptional group of people and they have got really good links with the local authority that support the group which we’re really grateful for.” Bipolar UK’s Torbay Support Group convenes monthly on the first Thursday at Central Church in Torquay.
