Membership fees for some leisure centres are scheduled to go up starting in the new year. This increase follows the council’s intention to allocate £760,000 towards enhancing its three Mid Devon District Council leisure facilities: Culm Valley, Exe Valley, and Lords Meadow. The council stated its satisfaction with “its highest ever membership base” and, consequently, aimed to keep prices very competitive. According to Councillor Josh Wright, the cabinet opted to “implement a smaller price increase than was recommended by our specialist consultants.” The full monthly membership will see an increment of £2, bringing the total to £41, while the swim membership will go up by £1, reaching £35. Mr. Wright commented, “When considering any price rises, the council must strike the right balance between affordability to leisure users and the cost of the leisure service to Mid Devon taxpayers.” The planned enhancements encompass a functional studio and updated gym equipment at Culm Valley Leisure Centre, alongside new poolside changing facilities at Exe Valley in Tiverton and Lords Meadow in Crediton. Furthermore, the council indicated an investment in new software designed to streamline the booking process across all its locations. These adjustments to membership fees are scheduled to take effect starting 1 January 2025.
