This Friday marks five years since Mikel Arteta, currently the Premier League’s third longest-serving manager and English football’s fourth, took charge of Arsenal. The Gunners are scheduled to play Crystal Palace at home in the Carabao Cup’s quarter-finals later, aiming to secure their first trophy since the FA Cup, which they won in the Spaniard’s inaugural season in 2020. Since that FA Cup victory, Arteta’s team has advanced to the semi-finals of a domestic cup competition only once, in addition to reaching the last four of the Europa League. They have not yet appeared in another final and have narrowly missed out on the Premier League title in the previous two seasons. Currently, they are six points behind league leaders Liverpool.
