A Leicestershire leisure centre’s refurbishment was marked by a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by an Olympian and a Paralympian. Swimmers Rebecca Adlington and Maisie Summers-Newton served as prominent guests during Harborough Leisure Centre’s family open day, which took place on Saturday. The renovation project encompassed the establishment of a new multi-sport arena, which commenced operations on Monday, taking the place of the former dome. Additionally, the facility now features a new gymnasium, an expanded wellbeing studio, and an upgraded pool section. The centre, managed by the operator Everyone Active in collaboration with Harborough District Council, provided complimentary activities, such as swimming sessions, on Saturday. Throughout the day, both Ms Adlington and Ms Summers-Newton participated in and supported both aquatic and land-based activities. Furthermore, complimentary gym sessions were available, featuring a live DJ and introductory personal training experiences. Matthew Hopkin, the contract manager for Everyone Active, stated: “We want to show as many people as possible the superb facility on their doorstep, which has something for everyone, no matter what your age, interests or ability.” Phil Knowles, Leader of Harborough District Council, commented: “I’m proud of the improvements made as part of the hugely successful leisure refurbishment project at Harborough Leisure Centre.“The investment has delivered improved accessible exercise opportunities for residents, with the facility also supporting a wide range of local groups and clubs.” He further added that this complements the significant continuous support provided for both rehabilitation and prehabilitation referrals, alongside other outreach initiatives.
