The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) has announced the reintroduction of a provincial ‘A’ championship, set to commence next month. Ulster ‘A’ is scheduled to welcome the Connacht Eagles for their inaugural match in the ‘A’ interprovincial championship during November. This competition will feature the second-tier teams from all four provinces, competing in home and away fixtures from November through May. Its primary objective is to provide consistent game-time throughout the season for players who do not regularly participate in the United Rugby Championship. David Humphreys, the IRFU’s performance director, stated, “We’re delighted to kickstart the men’s ‘A’ Interprovincial championship which will provide a host of players with a further means of developing in a meaningful competition.” He further added, “With the success of the Emerging Ireland tours, coupled with the return of an ‘A’ international against England next year, it is vital that we continue to provide players at provincial and club levels with opportunities to impress outside of the traditional URC and EPCR fixture windows.” It was noted that discussions regarding offering players significant game opportunities have been underway for a considerable period, and all four provinces have expressed unanimous support for this competition. Ulster is set to commence its campaign by hosting Connacht at Ballymacarn Park, the home ground of Ballynahinch RFC, on 22 November. Humphreys also expressed optimism that the competition would yield advantages for All-Ireland League clubs. “It is also great to see provinces taking matches around their local clubs,” he commented. He continued, “It is anticipated that as the competition progresses over the coming seasons these fixtures won’t clash with Energia All-Ireland League fixtures for the most part, thus potentially also offering players from the club game with an opportunity to impress.” This championship is expected to establish itself as a crucial component of the representative pathway, bridging Energia AIL and URC levels for Academy players and above in the seasons ahead.
