Northumbria Police has formed a specialized unit to address shoplifting and anti-social conduct throughout the holiday season. For the upcoming 11 weeks, plain-clothes officers from the force will be stationed daily in Gateshead’s town centre. The police force reported that it had already conducted 23 stop and searches, resulted in one repeat offender being returned to prison, and facilitated the return of several high-value items to retail establishments. Superintendent Stuart Liddell stated: “Retailers are already under a lot of pressure due to increased demand and, sadly, there are some individuals that take advantage of this.” Retailers have expressed concerns that shoplifting presents a significant challenge leading up to Christmas, as thieves utilize online platforms to sell stolen merchandise. Supt Liddell mentioned that the force was already observing positive outcomes from the increased resources deployed in the town centre. He added, “The response from the community has been extremely positive.” The force also indicated that efforts were underway with stores to collect evidence through high-quality CCTV systems located at Trinity Square and Team Valley. Lynn Stainsby, manager of Trinity Square, characterized it as a “great initiative”. She further stated, “We look forward to working together with the team to make the town centre a safer place to live and visit.” Post navigation Man Killed in Heavy Goods Vehicle Incident in Flintshire Former Rugby International Sentenced to Three Years for Bank Theft
