Neil Harris, the current manager of Millwall, has honored John Docherty, a former boss of the Lions, who passed away this week at 84 years old. Docherty had a playing career as a winger and also managed Brentford, Cambridge United, and Bradford City in addition to Millwall. Docherty holds the distinction of being the sole manager in Millwall’s history to guide the club to English football’s top division, achieving this feat in 1988 by taking a team that included Tony Cascarino and Teddy Sheringham to the former Division One. Speaking to BBC Radio London, Harris stated, “What a legend of the football club.” He further added, “What he achieved as a manager is something that we have all since tried to emulate.” Harris also expressed, “We want to be the next one to take Millwall to the promised land.” Docherty managed the team for almost 200 matches over two separate tenures, first from 1986 to 1990, and again in 1997. Harris remarked, “I was really lucky to have met ‘The Doc’. What a good guy,”. He continued, “He just oozed class and presence. It is so sad that he has gone, but his memory will live on for a long, long time.” To honor Docherty’s memory, the club plans to observe a minute’s applause and players will wear black armbands during their Championship match against Coventry City this Saturday.
