The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for rain, which remains in effect for north west Scotland until midnight on Monday. Flood warnings are currently active in three distinct areas. Forecasts indicate the continuation of heavy rainfall and wind gusts reaching up to 50mph (80km/h). In the Highlands, 50 to 70mm of precipitation is anticipated, with even greater amounts expected over the hills. ScotRail announced that certain routes would be subject to speed restrictions, leading to extended journey durations. Furthermore, the Inverness/Perth line has been closed following a chemical spillage incident at Inverness. Regarding road conditions, the Tay Road Bridge is accessible solely to cars, with its walkway closed due to powerful winds. CalMac ferry operations are experiencing delays across most routes and cancellations for multiple West Coast services. On Saturday, Storm Bert brought snow to Scotland’s central belt, causing interruptions to public transportation and the cancellation of sports events. The Queensferry Crossing, spanning the Firth of Forth, was shut down, marking its first closure since 2021, owing to the danger of falling ice. Throughout the remainder of the UK, numerous regions have seen travel disruptions as the storm continues to affect the nation, with 100 flood warnings still active. South Wales has endured some of the most severe consequences, prompting Welsh First Minister Eluned Morgan to characterize the local floods as “absolutely devastating”. The most significantly impacted railway lines connect London with the western parts of England and Wales. Great Western Railway advised travelers not to “attempt travel on any route,” and routes passing through Stansted Airport and Northampton have also been shut.
