Proposals for the transformation of Swindon’s town centre are scheduled for presentation at a council meeting this Wednesday evening. A preliminary document, titled “Heart of Swindon,” outlines eight objectives, encompassing investment in the town centre, enhancing its residential appeal, and fostering innovation through a broader array of retail and leisure options. According to Swindon Borough Council, several organizations, including Network Rail and Business West, have convened to assist in formulating this plan. Councillor Jim Robbins, who leads the council, stated: “Everyone is clear on the diagnosis: Swindon town centre needs complete reinvention. “Of course, they are just ambitions. But I’m determined the final vision document won’t be another glossy travel brochure where we never arrive at the airport. “I understand public cynicism created by previous plans and grand schemes for the town centre that haven’t materialised. But we need to flip the cynicism and get behind a positive way forward,” he elaborated. Mr. Robbins further indicated that collaboration among the private, public, and voluntary sectors would be essential, noting that partners have already begun to coalesce to shape these proposals. He also mentioned that substantial private investment would be required for the plans’ execution. Specific proposals exist for the realization of each objective. Among these, one proposal involves the provision of up to 5,000 new residences within the town centre, with a significant portion designated as affordable housing. Other proposals include investigating the redevelopment of the Brunel Centre, advancing a residential-focused development at Kimmerfields, and establishing a substantial entertainment facility. This month, the council’s cabinet is expected to consider and decide on the placement of the entertainment venue, as well as authorize the development of a comprehensive business case. Should the plans receive approval at the upcoming meeting, the council intends to solicit feedback from residents and other interested stakeholders to contribute to the formulation of a definitive version.
