Securing a point away from home is consistently beneficial, and Everton’s draw against West Ham signifies only one loss in their last seven Premier League fixtures. Considering their initial four league matches all ended in defeat, this represents a significant and much-needed improvement. Nevertheless, considering their substantial possession and control at London Stadium, the match felt like “one that got away.” While they arguably should have secured a victory, they could also have readily suffered a defeat. Indeed, had it not been for Jordan Pickford’s late awe-inspiring save from Danny Ings, a loss would have occurred. A primary concern is the absence of creativity in the attacking third, as the Blues are not generating sufficient clear-cut scoring opportunities. Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s recent scoring drought is noted—with some justification—yet as a centre-forward, he frequently endeavors to perform effectively with very limited service. Both full-backs have performed adequately recently, and while Ashley Young has contributed valuable assists this season, neither he nor Vitalii Mykolenko can be relied upon to consistently provide quality crosses for Calvert-Lewin. Dwight McNeil’s unavailability at West Ham shifted the creative responsibility to Iliman Ndaiye, a wonderfully gifted player. Among his numerous strengths is his ability to cut inside, especially from the left flank onto his right foot. He might have served as an alternative for the number-10 position, with Jack Harrison deployed on the left. The deployment of wide players on the opposite side of their preferred foot is increasingly common, and Calvert-Lewin specifically could greatly benefit from such service. Abdoulaye Doucoure’s importance to the squad is evident, and his diligence, drive, and invaluable goals have been instrumental in Everton’s Premier League survival. However, his playing style leans more towards energy than offensive initiative. This is a factor Sean Dyche must consider when assessing his players, particularly as Doucoure contributes to strengthening Everton’s midfield and consistently fulfills his defensive responsibilities. Hopefully, McNeil will be fit to participate in next week’s crucial match against Brentford. Dyche also anticipates that Youssef Chermiti and Armando Broja will soon be able to contend for first-team roles following their injuries. Everton is in dire need of goals, therefore increasing the squad size and fostering greater competition for positions can only yield positive outcomes.
