Rocky Flintoff has been included in the England Lions squad for their upcoming tour of Australia in January. The 16-year-old Lancashire batter is the son of Andrew Flintoff, the Lions coach and a legendary former England all-rounder. The youthful 16-man contingent also features England Test players Shoaib Bashir, Tom Hartley, and Josh Tongue. As part of England’s broader preparations for the Ashes series next winter, the Lions are scheduled to play two matches against a Cricket Australia XI and an unofficial four-day Test against Australia A. Rocky Flintoff secured his first professional contract with Lancashire in June, following his achievement of scoring a century for the club’s second XI in April. He made his first-team debut in July and has since participated in four first-class matches and seven List A games. Andrew Flintoff, aged 47, was appointed as the Lions’ head coach in September. During his inaugural tour as coach, which took place in South Africa earlier this month, Rocky was elevated from the England Under-19s team to the Lions squad. Off-spinner Bashir has participated in 15 Test matches since his England debut during the India tour in February. His selection offers a chance to gain experience in Australia ahead of his anticipated role as England’s primary spinner in the Ashes. Left-arm spinner Hartley featured in all five Tests in India in early 2024 but has not been included in an England squad since the T20 World Cup. Pace bowler Tongue participated in the 2023 home Ashes series and is currently recovering from a pectoral injury that has sidelined him for over a year. Pace bowlers John Turner and Pat Brown, both of whom have represented the senior England team in white-ball cricket, are also part of the squad. Experience is provided by Warwickshire captain Alex Davies, 30, and the productive Essex seamer Sam Cook, 27. Somerset’s promising wicketkeeper-batter James Rew has consistently been included in recent Lions squads. In addition to Flintoff, several players in the squad have played fewer than 10 first-class matches, such as pace bowler John Turner and batters Ben McKinney, Freddie McCann, and Hamza Shaikh. Pace bowlers Sonny Baker (Hampshire) and Mitchell Stanley (Lancashire) have not yet made their first-class debuts. Left-arm seamer Josh Hull, who debuted in Test cricket against Sri Lanka in September, will accompany the team as he recovers from a quad injury, but he is not an official member of the squad. The England Lions squad designated for the Australian tour comprises: Sonny Baker (Hampshire), Shoaib Bashir (Somerset), Pat Brown (Derbyshire), James Coles (Sussex), Sam Cook (Essex), Alex Davies (Warwickshire), Rocky Flintoff (Lancashire), Tom Hartley (Lancashire), Tom Lawes (Surrey), Freddie McCann (Nottinghamshire), Ben McKinney (Durham), James Rew (Somerset), Hamza Shaikh (Warwickshire), Mitch Stanley (Lancashire), Josh Tongue (Nottinghamshire), and John Turner (Hampshire).
