The inquiry into the fatality of a 10-year-old girl, who died in a mudslide during an educational excursion, has concluded, with authorities determining that no additional measures will be pursued. Leah Harrison, a Year 6 student enrolled at Mount Pleasant Primary School in Darlington, passed away in May while on a residential visit to Carlton Adventure in Carlton-in-Cleveland, situated near the North York Moors National Park. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) assumed control of the inquiry in October and determined that no individual was responsible for the incident. Nick Blackburn, who serves as the chief executive of the Lingfield Education Trust, stated that the outcome of the investigation was received “as a huge relief to everyone concerned”. The incident, which occurred at the facility owned by Hartlepool Borough Council, took place during an instructor-guided forest walk offered by the centre, coinciding with a Met Office yellow weather warning for heavy rainfall. A spokesperson representing the HSE confirmed that the agency conducted “a thorough investigation” and held a meeting with Leah’s family “to inform them that our investigation has concluded and we will take no further action”. A spokesperson for the council indicated that the local authority’s “thoughts remain with all those affected” but deemed it “inappropriate” to provide additional comments as an inquest has not yet occurred. Leah, characterized by her family as a “happy, bubbly, go-lucky little girl” possessing a “beautiful smile”, was among several students participating in the excursion, which took place after the completion of SAT tests the preceding week. Mr Blackburn stated that with the investigation concluded, he desired “to repeat my condolences to Leah’s family and thank them for their support of the school community in the face of their grief”. He additionally extended gratitude to headteacher Jo Blackham, remarking that she “tried so hard to save Leah”.
