Katie Mullan has relinquished her role as captain of the Ireland national team, though she will continue to be available for selection. Mullan previously led Ireland to an unexpected silver medal at the 2018 World Cup. Mullan, aged 30, was appointed Ireland captain in 2016, guiding her nation to an unforeseen appearance in the World Cup final two years subsequently. The leadership provided by the Coleraine native was also instrumental in the Ireland women’s team achieving their inaugural qualification for an Olympic Games, securing a spot at Tokyo 2020. Mullan characterized her experience as national captain as the “greatest privilege and honour of my life”. “For eight unforgettable years, I’ve always focused on what’s best for the team and this decision is no different,” Mullan stated. “I believe the time is right for me to pass on the armband. I’m not ready to retire from playing as I feel I still have much more to give to the Irish shirt. It’s an exciting time ahead.” Announcing the development, Hockey Ireland commented that Mullan has “been instrumental in raising the profile of Irish hockey on the international stage”. “Her legacy is likely to endure as both a captain who brought her team to unprecedented heights and a role model who continues to inspire young athletes across Ireland,” Hockey Ireland further stated. The official statement from Hockey Ireland noted that Mullan is recognized for her “tenacity, agility, and ability to rally her team”. Mullan commenced her athletic career participating in camogie and gaelic football, subsequently transitioning her skills to hockey. Following her time playing club hockey for Ballymoney, Mullan relocated to UCD in Dublin prior to her international debut in 2012. “I am incredibly passionate about the future of hockey in Ireland and the legacy we can build,” Mullan further commented. “In 2018 we witnessed the potential for the sport but we are still some distance off realising it. In my next chapter I will endeavour to continue helping drive the sport to new heights.” Post navigation Squad Updates for FC Copenhagen and Hearts Mother Overcomes Post-Natal Depression to Compete in World Strongman Games
