Organisers reported that an initiative by an NHS trust, designed to promote better health practices among its male employees, was met with a positive response. The North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that 100 male staff members from Peterborough City Hospital, Hinchingbrooke Hospital, and Stamford and Rutland Hospital participated in the event, which took place in Sawtry. Attendees, comprising staff and their male relatives, had access to complimentary health screenings provided by trust professionals. These checks covered various health aspects, such as cholesterol and blood sugar levels, nutritional advice, smoking cessation, alcohol moderation, mental well-being, male breast cancer awareness, and bowel screening. Chris Howard, who chairs the Men’s Staff Network, stated: “We were really keen to put on an event just for our male staff, and ‘Movember’ seemed like the perfect time.” The Movember campaign, observed annually in November, aims to generate awareness and financial support for various men’s health concerns, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Consultant urological surgeon Jyoti Shah, along with her team, offered free prostate health examinations during the event. Shah commented: “A lot of men like to bury their head in the sand when it comes to their health. They are often too busy to go to their doctor or to access the relevant services. “Staging community events like this encourages men to come along and get checked, and be informed in a much more relaxed environment,” she said.”Because prostate cancer often doesn’t have any symptoms, they won’t appreciate the need to go and get checked.” Local businesses provided sponsorship for the men’s health day, which also received support from volunteers. The trust indicated its intention to organize additional similar events in the future. For updates on Cambridgeshire news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X. Copyright 2024 BBC.
