A fire that caused considerable damage to a timber-framed residence was initiated by an accumulation of soot and debris within a chimney, according to firefighters. Emergency services responded to the property located on Dunmow Road, Thaxted, at 17:20 GMT on Wednesday, following the collapse of a section of an internal wall. The Essex County Fire and Rescue Service stated that the presence of soot and debris facilitated the rapid spread of the blaze through the attic and roof structure. Station manager Kev Jenner commented: “This incident highlights the importance of regularly maintaining and cleaning your chimney, especially in older, timber-framed properties, where fire can spread rapidly.” Firefighting units from Thaxted, Saffron Walden, Newport, and Braintree, supported by an aerial ladder platform dispatched from Chelmsford, were present at the scene. Mr Jenner further stated: “Our crews worked incredibly hard in challenging conditions to stop the fire from spreading further through the property. “Thankfully, the family escaped without injury but the roof has been significantly damaged and there is smoke and water damage throughout the home.”
