Didier Deschamps, the manager of the French national team, has characterized his choice to omit captain Kylian Mbappe from the roster for the upcoming Nations League double-header as a “one-off” occurrence. The 25-year-old Real Madrid forward was not included in the selections for the forthcoming fixtures against Israel and Italy. Mbappe had previously been excluded from France’s squad in October for two Nations League contests, a precautionary measure taken as he was recovering from an injury, with his return to selection anticipated for the current month. During a news conference on Thursday, Deschamps stated, “I’ve had discussions with him, it is a decision that I took for this block of matches only.” He further added, “Kylian wanted to come.” The forward, who transferred to Real Madrid on a free deal last summer from Paris St-Germain, has experienced difficulties with his performance since arriving at the Bernabeu. Mbappe’s record for the La Liga club shows eight goals in 15 appearances; however, he has only scored once in his most recent five matches. Real Madrid, the champions of both the Champions League and La Liga last season, suffered a 4-0 defeat to their rivals Barcelona last month and currently lag nine points behind the Catalans in the league standings. Mbappe, who was part of the World Cup-winning team in 2018, has accumulated 48 goals across 86 appearances for France.
