A 20-year-old inmate, who was taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the unexpected demise of a fellow prisoner, has been granted police bail. Authorities from Northamptonshire Police were summoned to HMP Five Wells, located in Wellingborough, on Tuesday morning, following the discovery of a deceased 49-year-old man. According to detectives, additional investigation is necessary because the findings from a post-mortem examination conducted on Wednesday did not yield conclusive results. Detective Chief Inspector Johnny Campbell characterized the fatality as a “tragic incident”. The identity of the deceased individual has not been disclosed by the police, but the force confirmed that his next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from specialist officers. HMP Five Wells operates as a category C correctional facility managed by the security company G4S. Its construction incurred a cost of £253m. The facility commenced operations in 2022 and accommodates approximately 1,700 prisoners. Information regarding Northamptonshire news can be accessed via BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
