A woman is participating in all 17 Parkrun events across Suffolk with the aim of increasing awareness regarding cervical screenings. Cara Lawrence, aged 28, serves as a cervical screening administrator for the Suffolk GP Federation, where her role involves encouraging individuals to attend their scheduled appointments. She plans to deliver talks at each Parkrun event, anticipating that her initiative will motivate a minimum of 17 individuals to schedule a screening. Explaining her choice, she stated, “I thought [Parkruns were] a good way to get around and even though it may not directly [affect] everyone at the Parkrun, everyone there will have a mum, a sister, an auntie, a daughter – just to spread awareness.” Mrs. Lawrence is contributing to The Very Important Invitation Project campaign. She highlighted that one in three individuals who receive invitations for screenings do not attend them. Data released by the NHS last year indicated that approximately 4.6 million people in England, within the 25 to 64 age bracket, had either never undergone cervical cancer screening or had not responded to their most recent invitation to schedule an appointment. According to NHS England, this screening procedure contributes to preventing 70% of cervical cancer fatalities, a figure that could rise to 83% if all eligible individuals participated. Mrs. Lawrence completed the initial Parkrun of her series this past Saturday at Kesgrave, located near Ipswich. This particular event is recognized for reportedly having one of parkrun UK’s highest female participation rates. She reported delivering a presentation on cervical screening to approximately 250 attendees at the event, where she was accompanied at her temporary stand by a nurse from her team. Mrs. Lawrence commented, “We had lots of questions from a variety of people, both men and women, so it was a good response for the first one,” adding that her team received two additional emails specifically mentioning her presence at Kesgrave.
