Law enforcement officials are conducting an inquiry following allegations that a rail replacement bus departed with an individual’s arm caught in its door. Police personnel were summoned to Bath Bus Station after a man’s limb became ensnared in the vehicle’s door as it commenced its departure around 17:45 GMT on October 27. David Redgewell, a public transport advocate and wheelchair user who observed the event, stated that those aboard the bus were “shocked.” Avon and Somerset Police reported that on-site medical care was not necessary, and investigations are currently in their preliminary phase. Mr. Redgewell indicated that the occurrence transpired after the driver declined his entry onto the bus, notwithstanding the vehicle’s provision for wheelchair access. He elaborated that fellow passengers had been urging the driver not to abandon a disabled individual when the driver proceeded to move the vehicle, with a man’s arm still caught in the door. “The whole incident was shocking,” he conveyed to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. He added, “I have travelled thousands of miles on rail replacement buses across Great Britain and Ireland and I’ve never seen this before.” A representative for Great Western Railway stated: “The safety and welfare of our customers and colleagues are our highest priority, and the treatment described is clearly unacceptable.“We’ve asked the coach company to investigate the allegations as quickly as possible so they can take the appropriate action.” The Pewsey Vale bus was operating as a substitute rail service between Bath and Westbury. The coach operator indicated it was unable to provide a statement while the matter remained under investigation. An Avon and Somerset Police representative urged anyone who observed the incident and has not yet provided a statement to contact 101.
