Volunteers from a charity report that their recently acquired premises have enabled them to expand the range of services provided to vulnerable individuals, particularly during the period leading up to Christmas. The IP17 Good Neighbour Scheme, located in Saxmundham, Suffolk, which commenced operations in 2020, relocated to new premises at The Gannon Rooms on Station Approach earlier in the current year. This organization, dedicated to addressing food poverty and loneliness, is now capable of providing an expanded array of group activities and support services. These include a warm room, festive gatherings, a games afternoon, and a designated space for social interaction. Organizers released a statement, asserting: “What started out as a response to the Covid pandemic, is now a vital lifeline to many in our community.” Additionally, the charity operates its Social Supermarket scheme, which is open on Tuesday mornings, offering food and household necessities at reduced prices to residents experiencing financial difficulties with bill payments. Approximately 80 individuals who are alone this year will also receive Christmas dinners, prepared on the premises, delivered directly to them. Michelle Frost, the service manager at IP17 GNS, stated: “We have a really good friendship with our service users and they know if they need anything they can come to us and we’ll find out if there’s a way we can support them.” She continued: “And since moving to the Gannon Rooms in April we can offer a lot more services whether that’s a free hat or coat, some food because they’re struggling – or a warm space.” Frost further elaborated: “We also offer free sanitary products and nappies and a subsidised shop. “Demand is definitely increasing, especially among pensioners who have lost their fuel allowance so donations are always appreciated. “Our social supermarket is a way to help those facing food poverty stretch their budget further. It’s not a food bank, although we do also offer emergency food supplies for those in crisis.” The organization has disclosed intentions to launch a men’s breakfast club in the upcoming year, and the facility additionally accommodates a children’s and toddler group every Thursday.
