Truro City manager John Askey stated that his team appeared “weary” during their 1-0 defeat to Boreham Wood in National League South, marking the fourth league loss under his management. The decisive goal, scored by Charles Clayden from close range three minutes after halftime, secured all three points for the home team. Andrew Neal nearly leveled the score for the Cornish club, but his attempt was thwarted by a notable save from Boreham Wood’s goalkeeper, Nathan Ashmore. This loss brought an end to an eight-game undefeated streak for Askey’s squad. Despite the defeat, they maintain their second-place position in the league standings, though they are now three points behind leaders Weston-super-Mare, who possess a game in hand. Speaking to BBC Radio Cornwall, Askey stated, “We’ve come here to one of the biggest spenders in the league and it’s probably one of those games where we could have done with a breather in between the last few games.” The Truro manager further commented, “We needed to play better when we were on the ball, we gave the ball away too cheaply.” He continued, “The commitment was there, everybody had a real go, but we just didn’t have enough tonight and one or two looked a little bit weary.” Askey also revealed, “We needed a break before we played them. We’d spoken to the league but they forced us to play tonight.” He concluded by saying, “It was just one of those that got away from us.”
