The new HBO television series based on Harry Potter is slated to commence production in summer 2025 at a studio located in the United Kingdom, according to recent announcements. Filming for the program will take place at Warner Bros Studios Leavesden in Hertfordshire, the same location where the eight original Harry Potter films were produced. Max, the streaming service owned by Warner Bros, stated that the upcoming series, which is expected to span a decade, aims to be “a faithful adaptation of the iconic books” authored by JK Rowling. The series will introduce an entirely new cast, with HBO reporting that 32,000 children participated in auditions for the main roles after an open casting call was issued in September. On Thursday, Max shared a post on X, stating: “Wands at the ready.” The post continued: “The upcoming HBO Original Series, #HarryPotter, will be filming at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden with production beginning in Summer 2025 and coming to Max.” Warner Bros serves as the production company responsible for the initial films, which starred Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. Rupert Grint, at the age of 12, sought a role in the original films after encountering a Newsround report detailing the open casting process. For the current television series, the casting requirements specified that applicants needed to be residents of the UK or Ireland, aged between nine and 11 by April 2025. HBO indicated that its casting team was reviewing as many as 1,000 audition tapes daily, following applications from thousands of children. The television series was initially announced in 2023. At that time, Max stated that it was intended to “lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail, much loved characters and dramatic locations that Harry Potter fans have loved for over 25 years”. The show is anticipated to consist of seven series, with each season adapting one of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books. Max further commented, “Each season will be authentic to the original books and bring Harry Potter and these incredible adventures to new audiences around the world.” Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod, both known for their work on the acclaimed drama *Succession*, were confirmed as executive producers for the series earlier this year. The actors portraying the beloved characters, including Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger – roles previously held by Radcliffe, Grint, and Watson, respectively – are yet to be announced.
