A teenager described as “jealous,” who fatally stabbed his 15-year-old former girlfriend, has been ordered to be detained for a minimum of 17 years. Logan MacPhail pursued Holly Newton for nearly an hour prior to assaulting her in Hexham, Northumberland, in January 2023. MacPhail, who was 16 at the time and is currently 17, had pleaded guilty to manslaughter but was convicted of Holly’s murder and the intentional wounding of another young person who attempted to intervene. At Newcastle Crown Court, Judge Mr Justice Hilliard imposed a life sentence with a minimum term, stating that MacPhail was “filled with resentment” and had intended to kill Holly during the “vicious and brutal” assault.
