Kevin de Bruyne appeared quite at ease when discussing his future prior to Manchester City’s Champions League fixture against Feyenoord. De Bruyne has, understandably, been more preoccupied with a groin problem he initially considered minor but which ultimately sidelined him for weeks. Manager Pep Guardiola believes the 33-year-old will not commit to an additional season unless he feels capable of making a significant contribution. However, a decision must be reached soon, as plans for the next season and beyond need to be established. De Bruyne is among City’s highest earners and, when fit, represents their most creative asset. Should he depart, a replacement would be necessary, but this would also free up space on the wage bill to facilitate the squad adjustments Guardiola will be seeking for a team that includes a higher-than-ideal number of players over 30. Having previously made City await a decision on his own future, Guardiola is not in the strongest position to demand clarity from others. Nevertheless, he requires it. The outcome could significantly influence Manchester City’s composition for the next couple of years.
