Durham County Council intends to implement new parking restrictions at four locations in Barnard Castle, stating the objective is “improving road safety”. However, residents of the market town are apprehensive that these changes could worsen an already “dire” parking situation. Opponents of the proposed measures at The Sills, Vere Road, Newgate, and Flatts Road have stated that these would diminish the availability of parking spaces for both residents and employees. A decision by councillors is anticipated on Monday. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the local authority indicated that it had reviewed current regulations and subsequently put forward several new restrictions as a response to existing concerns. Furthermore, Durham Constabulary reported that vehicles on Flatts Road were parking atop a fire hydrant and impeding emergency access, which could potentially prolong response times. Council officers stated that a “no waiting at any time” restriction was required at its junction with Galgate to tackle “obstructive and inconsiderate” parking. An individual who opposed comparable alterations at Newgate commented that these “would further reduce the current already dire parking situation” for residents. They added, “It is almost impossible to park during office hours, Monday to Friday, due to the number of people who work in town.” A different individual expressed that the changes would have a “profound and negative impact” on the quantity of available parking spaces, affecting “chiefly for residents, but also local shop workers”. A spokesperson for the council acknowledged that they “appreciated parking is at a premium within the town centre” but affirmed that the council aimed “to ensure the safety of vehicle movement throughout the town”.
