The Manx capital’s streets will once again host an outdoor nativity play, featuring a donkey and sheep. This event, named Christmas Live, will incorporate Christmas carols, musical performances, and live animals. It is scheduled for 18:30 GMT at North Quay in Douglas, a new location for the production. After a pause in the previous year, the 2024 staging will be the fifth iteration of the nativity, and it is expected to involve an unprecedented number of volunteers. Reverend Alex Brown commented that the performance’s collaboration among seven churches represents “an amazing feat of unity, and part of the message of the Christmas story”. Mr Brown further stated: “For the community, there are loads of people for whom the Christmas story is in their DNA, it’s part of what we’ve grown up with, and to have a way of celebrating that together is really important.” The Right Reverend Patricia Hillas, Bishop of Sodor and Man, is among the volunteers participating, taking on the role of a shepherd. Notably, a live donkey will be featured among the animals for the first time this year. White Jack, typically residing at the Home of Rest for Old Horse, is scheduled to stay on stage with the cast after the performance concludes, offering the public an opportunity for selfies. Mr Smith reported that, alongside the highest number of public volunteers, over 700 free tickets had been reserved in advance of the show, setting a new record. Donations will be collected to benefit St John Ambulance, the Salvation Army, and the Scouts and Guides Association. Mr Brown expressed his hope that the significant attendance would also boost local trade during the late-night Christmas shopping period. He further commented: “If churches and businesses can work together to bring people into the community, that’s a bonus for everyone.”
