A campaigner will receive the “highest honour” within a Merseyside borough, acknowledging her dedication to securing justice for individuals affected by the Hillsborough disaster. Margaret Aspinall, a resident of Knowsley, is slated to be granted the Freedom of the Borough due to her role as a proponent for justice and a fervent advocate for a Hillsborough Law, which the government endorsed earlier this year. Ms. Aspinall’s son, James, aged 18, was among the 97 individuals who perished during the Hillsborough tragedy. Graham Morgan, Leader of Knowsley Council, stated: “We will be able to formally honour her and recognise the impact of her decades long efforts to fight for justice.” He further commented: “Out of something so tragic, and despite her own personal loss, Margaret has shown courage and incredible determination.” This accolade is designated for individuals or organizations that have rendered “eminent” service to the region and has been conferred on only eight prior occasions throughout the borough’s history, establishing it as the most significant honor Knowsley can bestow, as reported by the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS). Morgan proceeded to say: “She is an inspiration to many and I am sure that the community of Knowsley will be delighted that we are able to honour one of our own in such a way.” Ms. Aspinall is scheduled to be presented with the Freedom of the Borough during a special council meeting in January, marking the commencement of a significant year for all advocates of the Hillsborough Law. After 35 years dedicated to campaigning with the principle that “people shouldn’t have to fight for justice, justice should fight for people”, the Hillsborough Law is slated for official introduction. The legislation is anticipated to become effective in April, providing substantial protections for future victims of large-scale disasters and obliging public entities to collaborate with inquiries, or risk potential criminal penalties. Morgan concluded: “”The decades of work and campaigning by Margaret and others involved in developing the Hillsborough Law mean that no family should suffer the torment of injustice in addition to the pain of being caught up in a major disaster, as the Hillsborough families did.”This is a lasting legacy that has been hard fought for over a long period of time – we can have nothing but admiration for Margaret’s crucial role in making it happen.””
