Certain residents have voiced complaints that recently implemented parking restrictions, intended to alleviate traffic congestion, have instead exacerbated the situation. Earlier this month, double yellow lines were applied to Major Street in Milnrow. This action followed Rochdale Council’s receipt of complaints concerning parked vehicles obstructing driveways. According to resident Michelle Kight, the previously “bad but manageable” parking situation has worsened because of the further reduction in available parking spaces. A spokesman for the council stated that councillors would address any concerns brought forward. Denise Murphy noted that council workers painted the yellow lines in under an hour, leading her neighbors to assemble on the street to “wonder what had happened”. She informed the Local Democracy Reporting Service, “It’s only been a week but already it’s a nightmare,” and mentioned that “harmony on the street” had existed before. She recounted, “I’d only been out to Aldi for 45 minutes and when I was back the lines were done.” Murphy further expressed, “I was like, ‘Oh My God!’. Surely someone at the council has some common sense? Nobody has put any thought into that whatsoever.” A petition, which has already collected over 100 signatures, has called upon the council to re-evaluate the 50-yard (47m) lines. This issue was brought before the Pennines Township Committee, where Rochdale councillors consented to investigate the situation and assess the potential expenses associated with increasing parking availability on the street. A council spokesman indicated that the local authority had not received any objections regarding the new parking restrictions during the three-week period they were advertised on lampposts and in the local press.
