A prolific perpetrator of romance fraud is currently serving the latest in a series of prison sentences for defrauding women of thousands of pounds through false promises of affection and a lavish lifestyle. However, concerns exist that he may be responsible for “hundreds” of additional victims. Raymond McDonald, aged 51, has been incarcerated multiple times over the past two decades, commencing with a fraud conviction in 2003 before transitioning to romance scams. His most recent release from prison occurred in December 2023. He promptly began simultaneously engaging with several women he encountered on dating platforms, swindling them out of money, and even faking marriage with one individual. By August, he was once again imprisoned, having left behind another trail of financial and emotional devastation. Some of the women McDonald defrauded have informed the BBC that the trauma they endured at his hands was comparable to that experienced by victims of sexual assault and domestic abuse. They assert that despite the material losses McDonald inflicted, the emotional anguish he leaves in his wake is far more profound. “People normally think ‘dangerous’ is somebody who can physically hurt you, make you bleed, but Raymond hurts people emotionally,” states Saad Sheban, the most recent detective responsible for apprehending the dating fraudster from County Durham.
