Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong is poised to sign a new five-year contract with the club, following a significant advancement in negotiations during the previous week. The 18-year-old has reached an agreement in principle for a new deal, with both sides currently in the process of finalising the documentation and specific terms. This development concludes a three-month period during which Acheampong was not chosen to participate in matches for any of Chelsea’s youth squads or Enzo Maresca’s first-team. With only 18 months remaining on his existing contract, Chelsea reinstated Acheampong to youth level competition and subsequently to the first team following the international break in late November. This reinstatement occurred concurrently with the resumption of contract discussions, enabling him to play at youth level once more and to make his initial start of the season in the Conference League at Astana. Multiple discussions involving key behind-the-scenes personnel, such as Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano from the ownership group, served to convince Acheampong, who had previously shown reluctance, to commit to a new contract instead of allowing his current agreement to expire and exploring other opportunities in the summer. Last week, when questioned about the young player, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca informed BBC Sport: “The club loves Josh – I love Josh.” Acheampong is expected to be in the starting lineup for Thursday’s Conference League match against Shamrock Rovers, and may receive additional opportunities to play at right-back given Reece James’ ongoing issues with recurring hamstring injuries. The England Under-20 international had previously been associated with clubs such as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Paris Saint-Germain.
