Defending champions Brisbane Heat commenced their Men’s Big Bash League season with a comfortable eight-wicket victory against Melbourne Stars, largely due to an unbeaten 72 from Jimmy Peirson. Peirson’s innings, comprising 56 deliveries, featured two sixes and five fours. This performance surpassed his prior highest score of 69 not out in domestic T20 matches, as the Heat successfully pursued a target of 163, achieving it with 11 balls remaining. Earlier in the match, the Stars had recorded a total of 162 for 6 wickets, with Sam Harper contributing 46 runs off 36 balls and Nottinghamshire’s Joe Clarke adding 32. Xavier Bartlett was the most effective bowler for the Heat, securing 3 wickets for 25 runs. At the MCG, Peirson emerged as the standout player for the Heat. Max Bryant also made a significant contribution, scoring 36 not out from 22 balls. Wicketkeeper Peirson sealed the victory by hitting the decisive runs off Surrey’s Tom Curran, whose 3.1 overs yielded no wickets and conceded 34 runs. The Stars, having concluded the 2023-24 BBL season in sixth place, have now suffered defeats in both of their initial two matches in the current tournament.
