Waste collection vehicles are being equipped with tracking devices to pinpoint areas identified as “digitally excluded communities.” This initiative represents the United Kingdom’s most extensive mobile connectivity survey, encompassing 31,780km (19,747 miles) of roadways nationwide, with Gloucestershire being one of the included regions. The research is being carried out by Streetwave, a firm specializing in the development of mobile network performance maps to pinpoint regions with inadequate data coverage. According to Gloucestershire County Council, this research will serve to guide decisions regarding planning applications for the establishment of new mobile mast sites. David Gray, who holds the position of cabinet member for environment, economy, and planning, stated: “Gaining an even better understanding of areas affected by poor connectivity will allow Gloucestershire County Council to target resources and provide information based on community need when considering planning applications for new mobile mast sites.” The River Severn Partnership (RSP), a collaborative effort involving multiple sectors focused on enhancing prosperity for the 2.6 million inhabitants of the Severn Catchment, commissioned this study. The RSP’s membership comprises councils and unitary authorities located in Gloucestershire, Shropshire, Herefordshire, Monmouthshire, Powys, Telford & Wrekin, Warwickshire, and Worcestershire. Beyond its economic objectives, the RSP also prioritizes environmental improvement and the development of resilience against climate change. A government grant totaling £3.75m is providing the funding for this connectivity mapping project. Information regarding BBC Gloucestershire is available on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
