Residents of Surrey are preparing to participate in a community sleep-out designed to generate funds for a charity assisting homeless individuals. Approximately 50 participants have secured sponsorship for this event, which is being organized by the UK charity Guildford Action and is scheduled to occur outside Guildford College on Friday at 20:00 GMT. Guildford Action reported that it has provided support to approximately 80 individuals experiencing homelessness in Guildford over the past 12 months. However, the charity estimates that a considerably larger number of people are sleeping outdoors who are not registered with local authorities. Joanne Tester, the chief executive of Guildford Action, informed BBC Radio Surrey that “nobody chooses homelessness” and that community initiatives such as this serve as a “stark reminder” of the circumstances many individuals confront. Ms Tester recognized that “people who are rough sleeping are out in all weather” and that a sleep-out event would never truly replicate the severe conditions faced by those experiencing homelessness. Instead, the objective of this community event is to generate awareness and secure financial contributions for the charity. The organization offers daily assistance, meals, and medical care to individuals experiencing homelessness. Furthermore, it implements preventative strategies to reduce the number of people who become rough sleepers.
