A local councillor has stated that a village church, previously facing the risk of becoming a “blight” on its community, has undergone a transformation into a “cherished” venue. Easington Colliery Methodist Church, situated in County Durham, faced imminent closure in 2022, attributed to escalating maintenance expenses and a declining number of congregants. To lease and refurbish the structure, a new community benefit society named Focus Easington was established. After undergoing a comprehensive renovation, the building has now reopened as The Welcome Centre, providing various services to local residents. These provisions encompass youth activities, a lunch club, and a community pantry. The project received an initial boost from a local housing association, which contributed a £30,000 grant. Durham County Councillor Angela Surtees, who is at the helm of Focus Easington, emphasized the significance of preserving the building and assisting residents in a highly deprived area. She stated, “If nobody had taken it on it would have closed and left a blight on the community.” “It has had an absolutely fantastic, positive impact.” Readers can follow BBC North East on X, Facebook, Nextdoor, and Instagram, and submit stories to northeastandcumbria@bbc.co.uk.
