Approximately £3 million, sourced from the Devon and Torbay devolution deal, is earmarked for enhancing housing quality in Ilfracombe. North Devon Council has initiated a pilot scheme to assess whether intervention in the Ilfracombe housing market can elevate the standards of current substandard residences. The council stated its initial plan involves acquiring two properties for refurbishment, with intentions to pursue additional renovations thereafter. It expressed optimism that this initiative would enhance general living conditions and contribute to the broader well-being of residents. Furthermore, the council intends to develop 84 low-carbon affordable homes designated for social rent across Woolacombe, Parracombe, Georgeham, Lynton, West Down, and Braunton. Some of these developments are planned as Community Land Trust schemes. Out of three business case proposals submitted to the government, two have been approved, securing a total of £2.79 million in funding. This sum will be drawn from the £16 million devolution deal capital fund. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Councillor Paul Crabb extended his gratitude to the officers for their efforts on the funding applications. He commented, “This should really deliver some decent homes and make a difference especially in the poorer areas.” Earlier this year, a separate £25 million bid by North Devon Council, aimed at transforming Ilfracombe and submitted to the previous government, was unsuccessful. Ian Roome, who served as Council leader at that time and is now the Liberal Democrat MP for North Devon, described the outcome as a “huge blow” for an area where 20% of households experience poverty.
