Glentoran, who finished as runners-up in the previous year’s competition after a 2-1 defeat to Larne at Seaview, have secured their place in the County Antrim Shield final following a 2-0 victory over Ballymena United at the Oval. Dylan Connolly opened the scoring in the 21st minute, and Jordan Jenkins extended “the Glens'” advantage five minutes before the end of the first half. Declan Devine’s team aims to claim the Shield, a trophy they last won in 2011 by defeating Linfield 3-1 in the final. The other semi-final is scheduled for Wednesday night, featuring Larne, who are pursuing their fifth consecutive Shield title, as they host Crusaders at Inver Park. The initial half saw limited scoring opportunities, with Andrew Mills making the first significant save in the 16th minute from a header by Daniel Lafferty. Ballymena believed they had scored after 20 minutes when Kym Nelson headed Josh Carson’s free-kick towards the goal, but Ben Kennedy was in an offside position when he redirected the header into the net. “The Glens” then opened the scoring almost immediately following this incident. Jordan Jenkins headed the ball down to Connolly, who, with his second goal in two games, finished first-time into the bottom corner. Shortly after, Jenkins attempted to score with an acrobatic effort, but it lacked the force to challenge Sean O’Neill. Nevertheless, the striker did manage to double the home team’s lead before halftime, following an impressive attacking sequence. Connolly flicked Marcus Kane’s pass to Jay Donnelly, who maneuvered past goalkeeper O’Neill before setting up Jenkins to score into an open net. Immediately after the second half commenced, Cameron Palmer’s pass reached Danny Amos at the back post, but the left-back’s shot went off target. Glentoran’s goalkeeper Mills was subsequently required to tip Calvin McCurry’s arcing shot over the crossbar. In the 71st minute, Colin Coates prevented the home team from extending their lead further. This occurred after David Fisher advanced with the ball and passed to Jenkins, whose subsequent shot was cleared off the goal line by the Ballymena captain. Substitute Wassim Aouachria then created two scoring opportunities rapidly, with O’Neill first making a low save to collect his shot and then tipping his second attempt over the crossbar. During the last five minutes, Kodi Lyons-Foster’s header, following a cross from Amos, hit the crossbar. The home team continued their offensive efforts until the final whistle but could not score a third goal.
