Scotland’s lock, Scott Cummings, received a one-week suspension following his red card in Sunday’s match against South Africa. The yellow card initially shown to Cummings was subsequently upgraded to red at Murrayfield. As a result, the 27-year-old Glasgow Warriors forward will be unavailable for Scotland’s upcoming autumn Test fixture at home against Portugal this Saturday. Cummings was initially sent to the sin-bin for executing a “croc roll” tackle on Franco Mostert’s lower limb just 10 minutes into the 32-15 loss at Murrayfield. The initial yellow card was later elevated to a red card, which, under a recently implemented new ruling, resulted in Cummings spending 20 minutes off the field. An independent disciplinary committee convened on Tuesday concluded that the red card was warranted due to foul play. The committee “determined that, whilst reckless, the low-range entry point of two weeks was appropriate with the full 50% mitigation applied”. Cummings’ sanction was reduced because he benefited from “an exemplary disciplinary record, good conduct and having shown remorse”. Scotland was already facing the absence of three other Glasgow forwards—Jack Dempsey, Max Williamson, and Gregor Brown—due to injuries for the match against Portugal. To fill these gaps, Warriors hooker Johnny Matthews and Scarlets prop Alex Hepburn were called up as replacements.
