After an intense and competitive 90-minute match against Poland, it appeared Scotland was heading for a draw in their Nations League A campaign, which would have resulted in relegation. However, their performance in Warsaw, and indeed for much of this campaign, was widely considered to have merited a better outcome. Andy Robertson then intervened. The Liverpool left-back’s powerful header ignited the Tartan Army and provided Scotland with a crucial lifeline, securing a play-off for the upcoming year. Marking his 80th international appearance, the captain expressed the consensus that his team “deserved” the 2-1 victory, adding that his first goal for Scotland in five years was “a long time coming.” Robertson further elaborated, “To do it so late on and it means something, now we get the play-off in March, it’s very important and I think it was what the performance deserved. I don’t think anyone can argue that. I thought we dominated, I thought we played well. We got done by an unbelievable goal from their perspective, but I think our performance deserved the win and I’m just happy to step up at the last minute to make sure that the lads got what we deserved.” Robertson’s previous goal for Scotland dated back to Steve Clarke’s inaugural match as manager, a 2-1 triumph over Cyprus in June 2019. The conclusion of this scoring drought was both timely and dramatic, particularly after Kamil Piatkowski’s remarkable strike had leveled the score following John McGinn’s opening goal in the first half. The 30-year-old Robertson, who now shares the same number of international appearances as Darren Fletcher, added, “I think under this manager, we’ve done really well at keeping going. We can go through all the games that we’ve done it in and late in games when people get tired and things like that, it’s fine margins and we’re really good at keeping going. We’ve got quality that comes off the bench, people that can bring quality and we showed that and we were the ones pushing for the win. We knew we had to win but we knew our chance would come and it was just whether we could take it or not.”
