Rail service suspended until Friday following Storm Bert-related flooding

A railway line has been shut down until Friday because of flooding attributed to Storm Bert. Northern announced that its rail services connecting Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria and Lancaster are anticipated to experience interruptions for the duration of the week, owing to issues identified in the Ulverston vicinity. The operator confirmed that trains would not operate on this route until Friday morning, though a bus replacement service will be provided for travel in both directions. Network Rail stated that personnel are actively engaged in removing debris from the tracks. Engineers had previously visited the Ulverston location last week to control the flow of a stream that had encroached upon the railway. However, on Saturday, the watercourse was inundated by melting snow, resulting in the flooding of the railway lines. Approximately 240 tonnes of earth have already been excavated from the tracks, and Network Rail indicated that a lasting repair would be implemented promptly.
