Bournemouth secured a victory over Manchester United, with Antoine Semenyo confirming the win. Following the team’s impressive 3-0 triumph at Manchester United, coach Andoni Iraola remarked, “It doesn’t happen a lot that you come to this kind of stadium and win 3-0.” However, the Cherries are establishing a pattern of achieving this scoreline at Old Trafford. This marks the second occasion within a year that Iraola’s team has decisively defeated United on their home ground. In December 2023, goals from Dominic Solanke, Philip Billing, and Marcos Senesi led them to their inaugural victory at the renowned stadium. On Sunday, Dean Huijsen, aged 19, initiated their path to another win, followed by Justin Kluivert’s penalty which extended their advantage, and Antoine Semenyo’s goal prompted visiting supporters to chant, “Man United, it’s happened again.” Conversely, while United is set to spend Christmas in the Premier League’s bottom half for the first time in the league’s history, Bournemouth ascended to fifth place in the top flight, marking their highest ever standing at this point in the year. They have accumulated 28 points from 17 matches, which is six points more than they had after the identical number of fixtures last season. The Cherries will observe Christmas positioned two places higher than Manchester City and are merely three points away from a top-four spot. Iraola took over from Gary O’Neil upon his appointment as head coach with a two-year contract in June 2023. After leading Bournemouth to their highest Premier League points total of 48 last season, the team has continued to progress impressively. Currently in their eighth Premier League season, the Cherries have secured victories against Arsenal (2-0 at home), Manchester City (2-1 at home), Tottenham (1-0 at home), and most recently, United during the 2024-25 campaign. Forward Antoine Semenyo shared with BBC Radio 5 Live, “It feels great, back-to-back wins at Old Trafford – my second time here and my second win. We know we have a good team and we are taking it game-by-game. I am not going to say too much and I don’t want to jinx it.” Michael Brown, a former Manchester City midfielder present at Old Trafford for 5 Live, stated that Bournemouth’s victory was entirely merited. He further commented, “I have got to give Bournemouth credit with their composure. They have stuck to their structure and defended in good numbers. Their workrate for each other is really good.” Justin Kluivert earned and converted a penalty for Bournemouth’s second goal. Bournemouth, scheduled to host Crystal Palace on December 26, has remained unbeaten in their last five Premier League fixtures, securing victories in four of those encounters. Huijsen, who scored the opening goal at Old Trafford, was acquired from Juventus in the summer for an initial fee of £12.8m. The goal on Sunday marked the teenager’s second in four appearances, following his winning goal against Tottenham on December 5. Iraola also mentioned, “We have lost [injured] Marcos Senesi, who is a great centre-back for us and very important for the team. We are not a very tall team, but with Dean, he is a very tall centre-back. He believes in himself – even in this stadium.” The absence of Dominic Solanke, who contributed 19 Premier League goals last season, represented a significant setback for the Cherries. Nevertheless, they have succeeded in scoring in their last 10 Premier League matches. Kluivert, who earned and converted the penalty that made the score 2-0, now has six goals in the top flight, making him Bournemouth’s top scorer this season. Given the current dip in form experienced by Manchester City, Manchester United, and Tottenham, the question arises whether Bournemouth could secure European qualification for the first time in their history. Their supporters appear to believe so, having chanted about European qualification during their victory at Old Trafford. Iraola further commented, “I think they have to enjoy it a lot because normally it doesn’t happen a lot of times that you come to these stadiums. I’ve come as a player and it’s difficult to have this kind of result, so obviously we have to enjoy, they have to enjoy. But we know how much it costs to win one Premier League game, just one against anyone. To win one Premier League game is very, very difficult, so we have to continue the same way otherwise the results will be much worse, for sure.” In December 2023, Bournemouth owner Bill Foley expressed confidence that the club could achieve European qualification within five years. More recently, he informed BBC Sport, “We have big aspirations, but we are patient. Our goal this year is modest. Can we move to the top eight or nine, maybe even sneak into Europe? Our real goal is to play in Europe, to give our players a chance to experience Europe and do it with little Bournemouth.” Should the team maintain their impressive performance, as demonstrated at Old Trafford, Cherries supporters might find themselves preparing their passports.
