The operation of a night bus route connecting a city’s airport has been prolonged until March 2026, following a successful trial period. This 787 service operates daily, linking Newcastle’s city centre, its West End district, and the airport, with services running from 02:50 to 05:20. Initiated in March, the service aimed to facilitate travel for shift workers and holidaymakers. According to transport group Nexus, it gained popularity among residents in west Newcastle. Representatives from Newcastle Airport stated that this development was “fantastic news” for both its passengers and employees. This service represents a collaborative initiative between Nexus and Transport North East, receiving funding from the government’s bus service improvement plan and Newcastle International Airport. John Souter, Nexus’s head of customer service operations, attributed the route’s 15-month extension to high demand. He commented, “It’s proven particularly popular with people living in west Newcastle.” Mr. Souter further noted that the service has also established itself as a “really useful link” in bolstering Newcastle’s night-time economy. The bus route commences at Newgate Street, subsequently covering the West Road, Westerhope, Newbiggin Hall, and the airport. Alice Andreasen of Newcastle Airport stated: “It is fantastic news for both our passengers and staff as the service offers a convenient, affordable and sustainable way to travel to and from the airport during the early hours of the morning.”
