Borussia Dortmund, who concluded the previous Bundesliga season in fifth place, secured their first Bundesliga away win of the current season in 2024 with a convincing victory against Wolfsburg, scoring three goals in five minutes, a result that served to cap 2024. Donyell Malen initiated the scoring, putting Dortmund ahead after 25 minutes with an acrobatic finish following a corner kick. Just three minutes subsequent to that, Dortmund extended their advantage at the Volkswagen Arena when Julian Brandt set up Maximilian Beier, who then successfully converted past Kamil Grabara. A mere two minutes thereafter, Beier transitioned from scorer to assist provider, as the Germany international delivered the ball for his compatriot Brandt to powerfully strike it in, making the score 3-0. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s team, playing at home, found a glimmer of hope in the second half by reducing the deficit to 3-1 when Denis Vavro outjumped others to head in a corner delivered by Maximilian Arnold. Dortmund subsequently faced additional pressure after former Brighton midfielder Pascal Gross received a red card for fouling Lukas Nmecha, who was in a clear goal-scoring position. Nuri Sahin’s squad withstood sustained pressure from Wolfsburg, maintaining their defensive integrity. They currently occupy sixth place in the Bundesliga standings, trailing fourth-placed RB Leipzig by two points. When the league recommences on 10 January, Dortmund is scheduled to host the reigning champions, Bayer Leverkusen. Wolfsburg, meanwhile, is set to visit Hoffenheim the following day.
