Plymouth Argyle’s head coach, Wayne Rooney, has revealed that his squad received “home truths” following a period of poor performance. The team’s last victory under Rooney was a month prior, a 1-0 win against Portsmouth. The Pilgrims, currently affected by injuries, are preparing for a crucial home fixture against Oxford United on Saturday. This follows two significant defeats: a 6-1 loss at Norwich City and a 4-0 away defeat to Bristol City in their most recent outings. The Argyle boss characterized the previous week as “the hardest” of his managerial career, expressing the view that the club’s youth team might have offered a stronger defensive performance than the first team during the match at Carrow Road. Speaking to BBC Radio Devon, Rooney stated, “A lot of home truths have been spoken.” He also noted, “The reaction from the players after the Bristol game has been really good.” He concluded, “I think it’s been an important week for us, and obviously we’ll know more from Saturday, but it’s been a good week.” Plymouth Argyle currently occupies the 21st position in the Championship standings, placing them one spot and two points clear of the relegation zone. All four of their victories this season have occurred at Home Park, contributing to the league’s 11th-best home record. Conversely, their away form is the worst in the league, with two draws and eight losses from their 10 road trips. Rooney expressed his hope that his team can recover from their recent poor performances, noting that an open dialogue has been established between himself and the playing staff regarding potential improvements. The former England captain further stated, “I’m an open coach who wants the players to have opinions, but I think when we look at the last two games we all had to be honest and there is no way he can sugar coat it.” He continued, “The goals we conceded were nowhere near up to the standards which we I expect and in this club expects.” Rooney added, “The players realised that and we need to stop that because it’s been far too easy for teams to score against us.” He concluded by saying, “It’s been a week of real reflecting, some really good meetings, some hard meetings as well, but I hope it benefits us moving forward.” Post navigation Alexis Mac Allister Reflects on Liverpool’s Victory, Highlights Areas for Improvement Critchley Comments on Shankland’s Form After Kilmarnock Defeat
